Access to adequate Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services saves lives and is essential to uphold the health and dignity of the populations in need. The provision of water and sanitation infrastructure and services, coupled with the promotion of good hygiene practices, reduce the risk of water-related disease transmission, impacting positively in health and nutrition outcomes. The provision of WASH services is usually one of the highest priorities following the onset of any crisis, whether sudden or protracted, following a natural disaster or complex situation. The provision of WASH services is closely linked to other sectoral interventions including Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Food Security, Livelihoods, Health, Protection, and Settlement, Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFIs).

Millions of women are vulnerable and in need of support as a result of poverty, wars, abuse, or trafficking. As they start the process of rebuilding their lives towards a brighter future, many go to safe houses, shelter camps with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Some of the items in the kit include deodorant, towel, underwear, reusable sanitary napkin/pads, maxi, shawl, sweater, maternity and sewing kits as well as some replenishing hygiene kit.

Kit contains products suitable to provide the basic hygienic needs of a 5-member family in precarious situations for a period of one month. Examples of material in this kit are washing powder, sanitary napkin, disposable razor, shaving cream, toilet paper, toothpaste, tooth brush, body soap, dishwashing liquid, shampoo, bath towel, nail clipper, sponge for washing dishes and tissue paper for face.

Emergency Shelter Kit is designed for those living in humanitarian settlements set up in the aftermath of natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Features of the emergency shelter kit are:

• Fit-for-purpose shelter kit consisting of two 4 x 7 m plastic sheets (also available in 4 x 6 m), two 24 m long ropes and laminated instruction leaflet.
• Designed for those living in humanitarian settlements set up in the aftermath of natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
• Durable plastic sheeting made from woven high-density polyethylene (HDPE) black fibres fabric, laminated on both sides with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) coating.

Specifically designed for distribution in the aftermath of a disaster when shelter capacities have been affected. Designed for one kit per family distribution. It is basically tailored for the repair of shelters.

Non Food Items (NFI) are any non-food article, tool, utensil which contributes to the physical and or psychological health of population affected by a significant deterioration in their environment which threatens their survival. Core Relief Items (CRIs) sometimes known as Non Food items (NFIs) are items other than food used in humanitarian contexts when providing assistance to those affected by natural disasters or crisis. NFI Core Relief kits include essential household items such as mattresses, torchlights, blankets, plastic sheets, buckets, containers for water, cooking utensils and hygiene kits. In addition, other items can be added to the kits during times of extra hardship, such as rechargeable fans in very hot weather and portable heaters, rubber boots, sleeping bags and winter clothes during the harsh winters.
